BIA Bridge Inspections

BIA Bridge Inspections

Akana’s bridge inspection specialists are assisting the BIA in updating its Bridge Management System to ensure that the required data for submittals to the National Bridge Inventory are accomplished.  Our first assignment under this Indefinite Delivery/Indefinite Quantity contract involves inspection of 174 bridge structures spread out over three states in the BIA’s Navajo Region.

For each structure inspected, Akana prepares a separate report documenting the assessment of the bridge condition, evaluation of the traffic safety features, required maintenance, repair and rehabilitation, and evaluation and recommendations for the most feasible solution.   In addition, post-inspection load rating analyses are conducted for each bridge and scour evaluations are conducted as needed.  This information is entered into the BIA’s BIIS database, which in turn will be submitted to the Federal Highway Administration for inclusion in the National Bridge Inventory database.

Scheduling is a key factor in this project.  To complete all 174 inspections by the target date of February 2015, Akana is fielding two inspection teams, each composed of a Team Leader and a Bridge Inspector to meet the requirements in the National Bridge Inspection Standards.  In addition to field crews, Akana has mobilized an office team to enter data in the BIIA database, produce reports, calculate load ratings, and to provide overall QA/QC.  The field teams transmit data several times a week to our office team, so reports can be generated for review by the field Team Leaders.  Once reviewed, the reports are submitted to the BIA on a bi-weekly basis.
