Nisqually NWR Environmental Education Building

Nisqually NWR Environmental Education Building

As part of the Triton Marine design/build team, Akana engineers provided civil site and structural engineering services for a new Environmental Education Center for the Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge near Olympia, Washington.   The facility encompasses meeting and instruction space, worker space, common equipment rooms, storage, utilities and occupant services.

Design incorporated sustainable features to the LEED™ certified level and addressed sustainability and resource conservation relative to site development and water use including zero increase in at-grade impervious pavement, low-flow water fixtures, and limited site disturbance.  Specific attention was given to customer value and program and budget alignment.  The project was one of several design/build projects completed under an IDIQ contract with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service that also included structural engineering for remodel of an office and design of a new boardwalk at the Stone Lakes National Wildlife Refuge in California.
