South Bay Pumping Plant Seismic Capability Analyses

Akana engineers provided structural engineering services to Trafo Equipmentos Electricos, Brazil, S.A.  for seismic analysis of several transformer assemblies and components in the California Department of Water Resources South Bay Pumping Plant Switchyard.  The Plant is part of the South Bay Aquaduct system, which was the first delivery system completed under the State Water Project, the largest state built, multipurpose water project in the United States.

The projects involved seismic analysis to determine capability to withstand calculated seismic forces, including parts load calculations and preparation of seismic capability reports.  Reports were prepared for:

  • 30/40 MVA Transformer Anchorage, including radiator, HV bushing, LV bushing, and HV surge arrestor
  • 36/48 MVA Transformer Anchorage – Radiator, HV bushing, HV neutral bushing, LV bushing, and HV surge arrestor
  • 3-4 MVA Transformer Analysis – Radiator, HV bushing, LV terminal box, HV surge arrestor
