Amtrak Seattle King Street Maintenance Facility

Project Details

Akana is providing construction inspection and commissioning services for the Amtrak King Street Maintenance Facility in Seattle—the first facility of its kind designed to maintain Amtrak Cascades’ Talgo equipment, unique to the Pacific Northwest. This project enables Amtrak to service trains in an enclosed environment and incorporates a distinctive “pool pit” design for improved maintenance access. The facility also features a 75-foot span, 10-ton bridge crane and a banded liner roof system with translucent panels for daylighting.

Akana’s construction inspection responsibilities include monitoring material placement, verifying compliance with approved quality, inspection, and testing plans, and coordinating third-party inspections. The inspector observes compaction testing, grading checks, and reviews sample logs for soils, aggregates, concrete, and asphalt. Detailed daily reports document all activities, quantities, and approvals. Akana also facilitates onsite testing, coordinates with Amtrak Materials Laboratories, and assists with public outreach to maintain positive community relations.

In addition, Akana provides commissioning services from design through warranty for HVAC, electrical, plumbing, lighting controls, life safety, and compressed air systems. The team collaborates with the building automation system (BAS) contractor to develop HVAC sequences of operation and conducts functional testing to identify and resolve performance issues. These efforts ensure proper installation and programming of systems such as make-up air units and exhaust fans, delivering a safe, efficient, and comfortable working environment for locomotive maintenance.
