North Satellite Modernization Project – Port of Seattle
Project Details
Akana served as Construction Manager for the Port of Seattle’s North Satellite Modernization Project, a major redevelopment effort to transform a 1970s-era terminal into a modern, passenger-focused facility. This multi-phase project expanded the terminal by approximately 240,000 square feet and introduced significant upgrades to improve comfort, accessibility, and sustainability—all while maintaining uninterrupted airport operations.
Akana provided full construction management services, including schedule and budget oversight, contractor coordination, quality assurance, and risk mitigation. Our team worked closely with the Port of Seattle, Alaska Airlines, contractors, and design teams to guide the project from groundbreaking in 2017 through completion in 2021. Responsibilities included managing phased delivery and ensuring compliance with stringent airport standards while minimizing operational disruptions.
The modernization added eight new gates, increased seating capacity, and enhanced passenger amenities with expanded dining and retail options, open light-filled interiors, and a premium Alaska Airlines lounge featuring locally sourced wood finishes. Sustainability was a key focus, with features such as a rainwater harvesting system that conserves more than 2.8 million gallons annually and design elements that achieved LEED Silver certification. Critical seismic upgrades were also incorporated to ensure long-term resilience. Akana’s leadership helped deliver a state-of-the-art terminal that reflects regional character and will serve travelers for decades to come.
