Akron Road Rehabilitation Design – Mission Support Alliance

Project Details

Akana, in partnership with VNSFS, provided civil engineering design services for the rehabilitation of Akron Avenue at the Hanford Site. The project involved pulverization and full road reconstruction, requiring detailed design documents, specifications, and supporting materials. Our team also developed design review comment forms to track responses and dispositions, ensuring compliance with site-specific protocols and procedures.

Akron Avenue, originally constructed in the 1940s, had experienced significant pavement distress over decades of use. To determine the most effective approach, Akana and VNSFS conducted a thorough site investigation to identify the existing road section and analyzed base material samples to evaluate the feasibility of recycling through pulverization. One unique challenge was predicting commuter behavior when an unpaved “shortcut” was either barricaded or incorporated into the final design. This element required multiple design iterations to ensure safety and maintain traffic efficiency.
