Bureau of Indian Affairs Facilities Condition Assessments

Project Details

Akana was engaged in a multi-year contract with the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) to perform facility condition assessments (FCAs) and related evaluations across BIA-owned properties nationwide. The purpose of this program was to support BIA in maintaining safe, efficient, and sustainable facilities through comprehensive assessments and strategic planning.

Under this contract, Akana conducted annual condition assessments covering approximately 10 million square feet of space, Energy Independence and Security Act (EISA) audits for 2 million square feet, and AHERA three-year asbestos re-inspection surveys. The scope also included space configuration and utilization studies for 19 million square feet and analysis of smart utility meter installations under the Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP). Facilities assessed ranged from residences and offices to schools, detention centers, and warehouses—many of which were located in remote areas requiring detailed travel coordination and close collaboration with site staff.

Beyond assessments, Akana provided technical support to the BIA Division of Facility Management and Construction (DFMC). This included evaluating active standard and safety-related work orders in the BIA Facility Management System (IA-FMS) and developing a property funding model to forecast operations and maintenance needs. These efforts helped improve reliability, efficiency, and long-term planning for BIA facilities.
