Project Details

Under a subcontract to Booz Allen Hamilton, Akana provided technical analysis and RCRA permitting support to EPA Region 10 for the review of permit applications submitted by Chemical Waste Management Northwest (CWMNW) in Arlington, Oregon. Akana conducted detailed technical reviews of initial and revised applications, completed the EPA federal Part B permit application checklist, and developed draft notice of deficiency comments for EPA Region 10 and the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality. In November 2023, Akana participated in a site visit to observe operations and discuss additional hazardous waste management units and treatment processes proposed for inclusion in the permit. Akana also reviewed CWMNW’s 2023 application and provided comments and suggested permitting language for waste analysis plans, container storage, tank storage and treatment, surface impoundments, and proposed thermal destruction and organic recovery units.

Akana representatives joined conference calls with EPA Region 10, ODEQ, and CWMNW to address key permitting requirements and issues.

Under a separate task order, Akana provided field oversight for the System Performance Test (SPT) at the Integrated Waste Treatment Unit (IWTU) at the Idaho Nuclear Technology and Engineering Center within DOE’s Idaho National Laboratory. Oversight included observing operations and sampling activities, monitoring air pollution control systems during test runs, and verifying adherence to QAPP-specified methods. Akana also conducted interviews, reviewed documentation, and prepared a detailed oversight report summarizing findings.
