Denny Way Substation Construction Management

Project Details

Seattle City Light’s Denny Way Power Substation was developed to meet the growing energy demands of the South Lake Union neighborhood, one of Seattle’s fastest-developing urban areas. The 115,000-volt substation was designed with a strong emphasis on sustainability, public benefit, and urban integration. Key features include more than 44,000 square feet of open space, on-site solar generation, and a heat recovery system that supplies 100% of the heating needs for several substation facilities. The design also incorporates sloped enclosure walls with metal cladding and translucent glass panels, creating a pedestrian-friendly environment and a distinctive architectural presence that softly illuminates the area at night.

Akana provided construction management services to Mitsubishi Electric Power Products, Inc. (MEPPI) to support the delivery of this gas-insulated substation in alignment with the master construction schedule. Our team managed procurement of specialized materials, expedited permitting, and resolved engineering and scheduling challenges. With MEPPI and Siemens located outside the region, Akana served as the local resource to ensure timely coordination and execution.

This project reflects Akana’s ability to manage complex infrastructure initiatives while balancing technical requirements, sustainability goals, and community benefits. Through collaboration with multiple stakeholders, Akana helped deliver a critical energy facility that supports Seattle’s growth and environmental priorities.
