Tukwila Pedestrian Bridge

Project Details

Akana provided construction management and inspection services for the City of Tukwila’s $6.3 million Urban Center Bridge project. This effort involved overseeing the construction of a new steel tied-arch bridge across the Green River to improve connectivity and enhance pedestrian and bicycle access in an environmentally sensitive area. The project required strict adherence to City of Tukwila standards and WSDOT Local Agency Guidelines.

Our team managed contract administration, field observation, documentation, and reporting throughout the project. Akana coordinated with multiple design firms to deliver urban trail upgrades, new plaza sidewalks, decorative walls, pedestrian, and security lighting—including a color kinetics system that illuminates the bridge arches—plus irrigation, shoreline restoration, raingardens, and landscaping. We also facilitated the installation of under-bridge utilities, approach ramps, and modular block walls, along with two new pedestrian connections to West Valley Highway (SR181).

The bridge itself is a 220-foot tied-arch tubular steel structure with a lightweight concrete deck suspended by diagonal cables. This design minimizes vibration and integrates utility support while addressing challenges such as limited staging areas and drilled shaft foundations near the riverbank. Akana’s leadership ensured compliance, safety, and quality throughout construction, delivering a landmark structure that combines functionality, aesthetics, and environmental stewardship.
