Project Details

Akana, in partnership with Encompass Architects, provided planning and design services for three sites: Santa Rosa Ranch School (Sells, Arizona), Pine Hill School and Gymnasium Replacement (Pine Hill, New Mexico), and T’iis Nazbas Community School (T’iis Nazbas, Arizona). These projects were initiated to deliver modern, locally accessible educational facilities designed specifically for nearby tribal communities.

Akana’s scope included site and building assessments to inventory existing assets such as buildings, roads, and utilities, as well as topographic analysis and boundary identification. Due to aging infrastructure and evolving program requirements, many existing structures were slated for demolition. Proposed facilities—including school buildings, dormitories, and faculty housing—were designed for efficiency, comfort, and alignment with contemporary educational needs.

Site layouts improved pedestrian and vehicular circulation, incorporated universal accessibility, and addressed stormwater management to prevent erosion. Design features included open spaces, regionally appropriate landscaping, and perimeter fencing for controlled access and safety. Utility systems were upgraded or repurposed where feasible, such as converting retired water tanks for fire suppression. Wherever possible, LEED principles guided design decisions to modernize systems and conserve resources.
