Embassy Feasibility Study – Affiliated Tribes of Northwest Indians

Project Details

Akana partnered with the Affiliated Tribes of Northwest Indians (ATNI) to advance their vision for a new Embassy that reflects cultural identity and community priorities. ATNI purchased a 7,390-square-foot, two-story office building in Portland’s Kerns neighborhood with the goal of creating a destination and gathering space for member tribes, as well as office space for the ATNI board and staff.

Akana provided architecture, planning, and structural engineering services through a comprehensive approach that began with a facility condition assessment of architectural, structural, mechanical, and electrical systems. The team documented existing spaces to establish a clear baseline for programming and design. Concurrently, Akana facilitated community engagement through surveys and visioning workshops, ensuring stakeholder input shaped the project’s direction.

Drawing on community feedback, Akana developed a detailed space program and conceptual design alternatives that deliver essential office and collaboration areas, integrate cultural elements, enhance ADA accessibility, strengthen security, and reimagine gathering spaces. Recommendations included mechanical, electrical, and structural upgrades supported by conceptual cost estimates to guide decision-making. Following ATNI board review, Akana refined the preferred concept and prepared a feasibility study and conceptual design report, providing a roadmap for the Embassy’s future development.
