NAYA Environmental Site Assessment & Opportunity Analysis

Project Details

Akana provided environmental and site assessment and planning services for the Native American Youth and Family Center (NAYA) campus redevelopment project in northeast Portland. NAYA sought to redevelop its 10-acre campus adjacent to Whitaker Ponds Park to strengthen connections to surrounding community spaces while incorporating cultural and community uses, restoring native habitat, conserving water, and improving overall safety and functionality.

Akana began by preparing an Environmental Site Assessment and Opportunities Analysis to identify site constraints and potential improvements. Our team collected data on existing structures, circulation patterns, and areas of interest, then worked with NAYA and its partners to define and prioritize projects based on feasibility, sustainability, and accessibility. Once priorities were established, Akana developed concept designs, performed structural analyses of key buildings, and provided treatment options considering cost, longevity, and performance. An overall campus master plan was created to integrate these improvements, including enhanced parking, circulation, and spaces for reflection and cultural engagement.

This project was uniquely collaborative, involving coordination with local agencies in land use, environment, recreation, and water resources. By providing technical assistance and stakeholder engagement, Akana supported NAYA’s vision for a campus that reflects cultural values while promoting environmental resilience and addressing the impacts of climate change.
