Avery Park – Inclusive Playground – Restroom and Picnic Shelter
Project Details
Akana provided landscape architecture and engineering services for the Avery Park Inclusive Playground, Restroom, and Picnic Shelter project in Corvallis, Oregon. This initiative focused on creating the City’s first inclusive playground while improving amenities at one of its most beloved parks. The project included the design and refurbishment of the playground and picnic shelter, as well as the replacement of the restroom facility, all within a site defined by significant natural constraints, including its location in the Mary’s River floodplain and a grove of mature oak trees.
Akana’s team collaborated closely with the City’s urban forester and maintenance staff, a playground equipment supplier, and a prefabricated restroom designer to ensure the design respected environmental conditions and met accessibility goals. Throughout the process, Akana provided ongoing construction cost estimates to support informed decision-making and used Microsoft Project to manage schedules during permitting and bidding, keeping the project on track for timely delivery.
During construction, Akana led the preconstruction meeting and facilitated weekly progress meetings with the contractor to maintain clear communication and project momentum. The result is a thoughtfully designed, inclusive space that enhances community access to recreation while preserving the park’s natural character.
