Sophie Trettevick Indian Health Center Expansion & Facilities Maintenance Garage

Project Details

Akana is supporting the Makah Tribe in Neah Bay, Washington, with the design and construction of a new healthcare facility and companion maintenance building to replace outdated structures located in a tsunami hazard zone. The new 26,000-square-foot Sophie Trettevick Indian Health Center (STIHC) will be situated on the Tribe’s Health Care Campus at 100 Wellness Way, providing expanded services to meet the growing needs of the community. The facility will include a pharmacy, medical clinic, dental clinic, physical therapy space, laboratory, and health education classroom, ensuring comprehensive care for tribal members.

In addition to the clinic, Akana is designing a 3,300-square-foot facilities maintenance building that will house ambulance bays and serve as a distribution center for emergency supplies during natural disasters. The structure includes storage on an upper floor, vehicle bays, office space, and employee accommodations on the ground level. A covered exterior area will provide space for a mobile emergency trailer and can function as a drive-through for emergency supply distribution.

Both buildings are designed as “essential facilities,” incorporating robust structural components such as oversized columns, beams, and enhanced bracing to withstand high winds and seismic events. This project strengthens the Tribe’s ability to deliver quality healthcare and emergency response services, ensuring resilience and safety for the community.
