Swinomish Apartments

Project Details

Akana is providing full architectural and engineering design services for the Swinomish Indian Tribal Community’s Townhouses and Cottages project in La Conner, Washington. This housing initiative is designed to expand residential options for Tribal members and elders while improving site infrastructure. The project includes road and utility upgrades along with construction of two townhomes totaling 7,943 square feet and six elder cottages, each approximately 923 square feet.

Akana’s scope of work began with site analysis, including review of topography, vegetation, and drainage patterns, supported by a new survey to confirm existing conditions. The team developed the site master plan, building concept design, and complete design development, incorporating code updates and sustainability strategies. Akana collaborated with focus groups to identify housing preferences and establish design guidelines that reflect community priorities.

Beyond design, Akana assisted the Tribe with the construction bid and contracting process and continues to provide construction management and observation throughout active construction. This integrated approach ensures quality, compliance, and timely delivery, resulting in housing that meets the needs of Tribal members while supporting long-term community goals.
