WaKanim Peavey Outdoor Arboretum Sculpture – Oregon State University
Project Details
Akana partnered with Native American artist Shirod Younker and the WaKanim Artist Collaborative to support the installation of five unique aluminum sculptures at Oregon State University’s Peavey Arboretum. The project aimed to celebrate cultural artistry within a natural setting, creating a meaningful outdoor experience for visitors.
Akana provided design and engineering services to ensure the sculptures were structurally sound and securely installed. The largest piece measured approximately 8.5’ x 3.25’ x 3’ (LHW), and its convex basket-like form required careful consideration of structural integrity and attachment methods. Our engineering efforts included advising on sculpture design, footing systems, and mounting hardware. In addition, Akana delivered site design, erosion control design, permitting support, and a comprehensive tree protection strategy to safeguard the surrounding environment.
This work was completed on a pro-bono basis, accelerating project delivery and reducing costs for the public installation. Through collaboration and technical expertise, Akana helped bring this cultural art project to life while ensuring safety, durability, and environmental stewardship.
